Opelousas, LA - St. Landry-Evangeline United Way announces new date for its 2nd Annual Yard Bird cook-off (previously postponed due to weather).
The Yard Bird Cook-Off is Saturday, June 1 on the corner of Court and Bellevue Streets in historic downtown Opelousas. This event is free to attend and open to the public.
Public Tasting and festivities are from 11:30 AM until 6:00 PM. Southwinz Band, and KBON’s DJ Big Al will be the featured entertainment.
“Attendees can look forward to a silent auction, fun jump for the kids, and a sampling of great dishes,” states United Way’s Executive Director, Ginger LeCompte. Cash Prizes for first, second and third place winners and prize for Fan Favorite and Best Booth will be presented. Registration for Cook Teams is $50. Founded in 1957, United Way has raised money and awareness for issues related to poverty and the working poor, hunger, domestic violence, homelessness, early childhood education, illiteracy, and disaster. United Way programs include the Leader In Me (for elementary schools), Dolly Parton Imagination Library (a free book each month that has provided 97,000 books to local children age 0-5); Stuff the Bus (school supply drive); FoodNet food drive; FamilyWize Prescription Discount Program; Community Resource Program, and much more.
